The Vision of the Universal Form
विश्वरूपदर्शनयोगः · Viśvarūpa-darśana-yoga · 55 verses
Arjuna asks to see Krishna's true form and is shown the whole universe in one body: creation, countless faces, a radiance like a thousand suns, and time itself devouring everything. Overwhelmed, he begs to see the familiar gentle form again. The chapter is about awe and fear, and about learning that devotion, not understanding alone, is how one stands before something that vast.
Traditionally linked with Rahu, the planet of sudden, outsized and disorienting change. In this chapter Arjuna sees something far larger than he can hold, and asks for the familiar form back. It is read during a volatile Rahu transit or a Rahu Maha Dasha, when events feel bigger and faster than you can manage: it names awe and terror honestly and shows that asking for steadiness is no shame. It is a reflective practice, not a prediction.

Arjuna says: your words about the highest secret of the self have cleared my confusion. I have heard in detail how beings arise and dissolve, and of your unending greatness. As you have described yourself, I long to see your divine form. If you think I am able to bear it, show me your unchanging self.

Sanjaya tells the king: having spoken, Krishna showed Arjuna his supreme divine form, with countless mouths and eyes, many wondrous sights, many divine ornaments and raised weapons, divine garlands, robes and fragrances, endless, faces looking everywhere. If the light of a thousand suns rose at once in the sky, it might resemble the radiance of that great being. There Arjuna saw the whole universe, divided in many ways, standing together in the body of the God of gods. Filled with amazement, hair standing on end, he bowed his head, folded his hands and spoke.

You have no beginning, middle or end, infinite power and countless arms, with the sun and moon as your eyes and a blazing fire in your mouth, warming this universe with your radiance. Hosts of gods enter you; some, afraid, praise you with folded hands, and great sages and perfected beings hail you. All the divine and heavenly orders gaze at you in astonishment.

So rise, win glory, defeat your enemies and enjoy a flourishing kingdom. They have already been struck down by Me; be only the instrument, Arjuna. Drona, Bhishma, Jayadratha, Karna and the other brave warriors have been slain by Me; do not be afraid, fight, and you will conquer your rivals in battle.

Arjuna says: it is right that the world rejoices in your glory, that demons flee in fear in every direction and hosts of perfected beings bow to you. Why should they not bow to you, great one, greater than Brahma, the first creator? Infinite Lord of gods, home of the universe, you are the imperishable, what is and what is not, and what lies beyond both. You are the first god, the ancient person, the supreme resting place of this universe, the knower and the known, and the highest abode; the universe is spread out by you, whose forms are endless. You are Vayu, Yama, Agni, Varuna, the moon, the lord of creatures and the great-grandfather. I bow to you a thousand times, and again and again. I bow to you from the front, from behind, from every side, for you are everything; your power is infinite and your strength immeasurable, you pervade all, and so you are all.

Krishna says: this form of Mine that you have seen is very hard to see; even the gods always long to see it. Not by the Vedas, austerity, charity or sacrifice can I be seen as you have seen Me. But by devotion that turns to nothing else, I can be known in this way, seen in truth, and entered into, Arjuna.
मत्कर्मकृन्मत्परमो मद्भक्तः सङ्गवर्जितः ।
निर्वैरः सर्वभूतेषु यः स मामेति पाण्डव ॥
matkarmakṛnmatparamo madbhaktaḥ saṅgavarjitaḥ |
nirvairaḥ sarvabhūteṣu yaḥ sa māmeti pāṇḍava ||
One who does My work, holds Me as the highest aim, is devoted to Me, free from attachment and without hatred toward any being, comes to Me, Arjuna.
