A birth chart (Kundali) is a precise, reproducible object: the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets along the ecliptic, computed for one exact latitude/longitude and one exact moment — the instant you were born. Change the place or the minute, and you get a genuinely different chart, because you're describing a genuinely different sky.
What's traditional is the interpretive framework laid on top of that sky — which houses, periods, and combinations mean what. What's astronomy is the sky itself. Everything on Jyotesh is computed with real ephemeris math (VSOP87 planetary theory and lunar theory), not a lookup table of generic "sign" descriptions.
1 · Planetary Mechanics
Nine Clocks, Nine Speeds
Every Graha (planetary point) used in Jyotish orbits at its own real, measured speed. That's not a metaphor — it's why a birth chart carries information about timescales as different as "today's mood" and "the arc of your career." The Moon circles back to the same point against the stars in about 27.3 days; Saturn takes nearly 29.5 years. Nine bodies, nine different clock speeds, all ticking at once from the moment you were born.
Bars are on a logarithmic scale — on a straight linear one, Saturn's bar would be almost 40× longer than the Moon's, and the Moon's would nearly vanish. Rahu/Ketu aren't planets but the two points where the Moon's orbital plane crosses the Sun's — their 18.6-year regression is exactly what drives the eclipse cycle.
2 · Nakshatras & Houses
Slicing the Sky Two Ways
The ecliptic — the path the Sun, Moon, and planets all appear to travel along — is a full 360° circle. Jyotish slices that circle into two independent grids at once: 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions, tied to fixed star groups) for what kind of energy a placement carries, and 12 Bhavas (houses, tied to your own Ascendant) for which area of life it lands in.
360° ÷ 27 = 13°20′ per Nakshatra. Each Nakshatra is further split into 4 Padas of 3°20′ — 108 Padas around the whole circle, a number that shows up constantly elsewhere in Vedic tradition for exactly this reason.
The 12 Houses — Same Sky, Measured From You
Where the Nakshatras are fixed against the stars, the 12 houses are fixed against your Ascendant — the exact point of the ecliptic rising on your eastern horizon at your moment of birth. That's the one number in the whole chart that depends on time down to the minute, since the Ascendant moves a full sign roughly every two hours.
3 · Time Activation
The Chart Says What. Dasha Says When.
A birth chart on its own is timeless — it describes potentials, not a schedule. The Vimshottari Dasha system is what turns it into a timeline: a fixed 120-year cycle, divided among the 9 Grahas in proportions set by the Moon's Nakshatra at birth, so no two people share the same sequence starting at the same age.

Zooming In: Mahadasha → Antardasha → Sookshma Dasha
Each planet's Mahadasha (MD) — its main multi-year period — is itself subdivided into an Antardasha (AD) for every one of the 9 planets, and each Antardasha subdivides again into a Sookshma Dasha (SD). It's the same proportional logic, nested three levels deep — like zooming from years, to months, to weeks.
Transits: The Trigger
A Dasha period tells you which planet's themes are "live" right now. A transit is that same planet (or another one) physically passing over — or aspecting — one of your natal positions on any given day. The classical view is that an event tends to manifest when both align: a relevant Dasha running and a supporting transit crossing the right natal point at the right time. Neither alone is treated as the whole story.
