The Yoga of Divine Glories

विभूतियोगः · Vibhūti-yoga · 42 verses

Arjuna asks Krishna to describe his glories so that he can recognise the divine everywhere. Krishna answers with a list: the sun among lights, the Ganga among rivers, Om among sounds, the lion among beasts, courage, silence, knowledge. The point is a way of seeing: wherever something is brilliant, noble or alive, you are looking at a spark of the divine.

Meaning · Verse 1–3

Krishna says: listen again to My highest word, which I will tell you, dear one, out of concern for your good. Neither the hosts of gods nor the great sages know My origin, for I am the source of the gods and the sages in every way. One who knows Me as unborn, without beginning and the great Lord of the worlds is, among mortals, free of confusion and released from all wrong.

Meaning · Verse 4–7

Intelligence, knowledge, freedom from confusion, patience, truth, self-control, calm, pleasure and pain, birth and death, fear and fearlessness, non-violence, evenness of mind, contentment, discipline, giving, fame and disgrace: all these varied qualities of beings arise from Me alone. The seven great sages and the four ancient Manus before them were born of My mind, and from them came all these creatures in the world. One who truly knows this glory and power of Mine becomes firm in unshaken yoga; of this there is no doubt.

Meaning · Verse 8–11

I am the source of everything, and everything unfolds from Me; the wise who understand this worship Me with deep feeling. With their minds on Me and their lives given to Me, enlightening one another and always speaking of Me, they are content and glad. To those who are always devoted and worship Me with love, I give the yoga of understanding by which they come to Me. Out of compassion for them, staying within their hearts, I destroy the darkness born of ignorance with the bright lamp of knowledge.

Meaning · Verse 12–15

Arjuna says: you are the supreme Brahman, the supreme abode and the supreme purifier, the eternal divine Person, the first god, unborn and all-pervading. So say all the sages, Narada, Asita, Devala and Vyasa, and you tell me so yourself. I accept as true all that you say to me, Keshava; neither gods nor demons know your manifestation. You alone know yourself by yourself, supreme Person, source and lord of beings, God of gods, master of the universe.

Meaning · Verse 16–18

Please tell me fully of your divine glories, by which you fill all these worlds. How may I know you, yogi, by constant meditation? In which various forms should I think of you, Lord? Tell me again in detail of your power and your glories, Janardana, for I am never satisfied with hearing your nectar-like words.

I stand holding up this entire universe with a single fragment of Myself.
